The Asha Mathur Research & Education Trust (AMRET) will award the PROF. ASHA MATHUR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP in the field of Medical Virology during the academic year 2026-27.Â
Prof Asha Mathur (1938-2024) was a Professor of the erstwhile Department of Pathology & Bacteriology (and later Head of the Department of Microbiology) in the King Georges Medical College, Lucknow. After retirement from KGMC, she was Professor & Head of the Department of Microbiology & Pathology at the Saraswati Dental College, Lucknow. She was, apart from being a celebrated teacher and a superb clinician, a great researcher who published over 200 research papers, and was the research guide of over 60 students. She carried out pioneering research into the virology and microbiology of diseases prevalent in India, including Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue and Corona virus. She won numerous honors from her peers, including from the ICMR and DST, and had a corner dedicated to her at the National Science Museum. This Fellowship has been created to honor her memory and to encourage research in medical virology in India.
Eligibility
The Research Fellowship will be awarded to a Senior Resident or a senior PhD student, whose thesis topic focuses on Virology. She/he must be enrolled in an Institute in India, though the awardee can be of any nationality. The Research Fellow is expected to present her/his work at a public lecture in her/his Institution towards the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

Selection Process and Format for Applications
Interested students are encouraged to submit a research proposal to the Trust in the following format, at the e-mail address given below. The proposals would be reviewed by an Expert Committee, consisting of eminent virologists, who would select and recommend the Research Fellow to the Trust.

Activities that would be carried out in the proposed research so as to achieve the goal
The key expected outputs of the proposed research
Budget requested for the proposed research (subject to a maximum of Rs. 2 lakhs for activities described in the proposal, including for the procurement of chemicals and infrastructure; the source of the balance funds must also be mentioned)
Approval of the Head of Department
The research proposal (including the budget) should be a maximum of 2,000 words
